The Shell Ladies of Margate

Welcome to Margate, our Shell Ladies. These larger-than-life beauties have been made by artist Ann Carrington, each of the 13 containing 900 shells and being named after a famous, or infamous, lady of Margate.

Below is our own shell lady: Fanny Newlove, discoverer of the Grotto and later its first female proprietor. She presides imperiously over the café.

UPDATE! 27 November 2008

The bronze shell lady, Mrs Booth, has today been hoisted into position on the end of the Harbour Arm.
